Washington County Tenn. School Board accepts director’s resignation, appoints interim

HAS A NEW LEADER TONIGHT. THE BOARD HAD TO TAKE ACTION… BECAUSE DIRECTOR OF SCHOOLS KIMBER HALLIBURTON RESIGNED A WEEK AGO TODAY TODAY TO TAKE A JOB IN MISSISSIPPI. TONIGHT – THE BOARD CHOSE LONG-TIME ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL BILL FLANARY TO BE THE INTERIM DIRECTOR OF THE SYSTEM. JUSTIN SOTO WAS THERE WHEN THE VOTE HAPPENED. SOT 1 “I MOVE WE ACCEPT MISS HALLIBURTON’S RESIGNATION.” THE BOARD QUICKLY MOVED TO APPOINT AN INTERIM REPLACEMENT FOR KIMBER HALLIBURTON… ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF SCHOOLS BILL FLANARY WAS THE ONLY NAME MENTIONS… BUT NOT WITHOUT SOME QUESTIONS. SOT 3 “HAS ANY BOARD MEMBER APPROACHED YOU PRIOR TO TONIGHT’S MEETING ABOUT THE JOB? FLANARY SAID HE WAS ASKED BY A BOARD MEMBER IF HE WOULD CONSIDER AN INTERIM POSITION – AND THAT WAS BEFORE HALLIBURTON’S RESIGNATION. SOT 5 “I DID, AND THE REASON I DID IT WAS AFTER MISS HALLIBURTON TOLD US ABOUT THE JOB OPPORTUNITY IN ALABAMA. AND I COULD SAY MORE BUT I’D RATHER NOT AT THIS TIME. AND MY QUESTION TO HIM WAS IF THIS SITUATION, ANTICIPATING SHE DID EXACTLY WHAT SHE DID.” SOT 6 “4-5 BOARD MEMBERS CALLED OUR LAWYER AND WITHOUT COMING TO THE BOARD, WITHOUT EVEN TALKING TO THE CHAIRMAN, I FOUND OUT ABOUT IT WHEN ONE OF THE MAYORS TOLD ME WHAT Y’ALL WERE DOING AND THEN Y’ALL WRITE A LETTER TO THE SUPERINTENDENT TELLING HER THAT SHE CAN RESIGN.” SOT 7 “IT WASN’T A LETTER ASKING HER TO RESIGN, HER LAWYER ASKED ME TO PUT PEN TO PAPER.” SOT 10 “WE GOT BOARD MEMBERS GOING OUTSIDE THEIR SCOPE OF DUTIES AND RUNNING AROUND TRYING TO GET SOMETHING DONE.” CLARENCE MABE: SOT 12 “YOU SAID TO ME THEY HAVE 4 VOTES TO GET RID OF MRS. HALLIBURTON, THEY’RE WAITING ON 1 MORE.” SOT 13 “SINCE EVERYBODY IS TALKING ABOUT ME BEING THE 5TH VOTE, DAMN RIGHT I’M THE 5TH VOTE AND I’M GOING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING. I’M TIRED OF IT. I’M TIRED OF IT.” DESPITE THE DEBATE- FLANARY HAD THIS MESSAGE. SOT 20 “WE HAVE GOT GREAT LEADERSHIP AT ALL LEVELS OF THIS ORGANIZATION. WE’RE GOING TO BE FINE.” AS FOR WHO WILL LEAD THE SYSTEM ON A PERMANENT BASIS…. THE BOARD WILL HAVE TO LAUNCH A SEARCH. MEANWHILE – DIRECTOR OF SCHOOLS KIMBER HALLIBURTON’S LAST OFFICIAL DAY ON THE JOB IS TOMORROW. THE BOARD ALSO APPROVED A 68 MILLION DOLLAR BALANCED BUDGET. TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN… THEY CUT THIRTEEN POSITIONS. BUT THE SCHOOL BOARD SAID THAT WON’T MEAN EMPLOYEES WILL BE LAID OFF. THEY JUST WON’T FILL THOSE OPEN POSITIONS.
