Students Protest Their Teacher’s ‘Forceful’ Resignation After Shocking Video

For Complex News, I’m Natasha Martinez. Students are coming to the aide of their teacher,
who resigned after a video of her pulling the hair of a sleeping student went viral. Lisa Houston, who has been teaching at Palmetto
High for 27 years was seen standing on a students desk, patting his face nudging him with her
foot and pulling him by his hair in order to wake him up. The clip quickly went viral, with many people
appalled at the teacher’s behavior but her students are saying that the news was sensationalized. After the video went viral, Houston decided
to immediately resign but her lawyer says she experienced a forced resignation. Students are calling for her to get her job
back since the video was misinterpreted in their opinion. According to The Root, students marched in
support from the school to the district office in a “prayer walk,” and have been using the
hashtag #iftheyfirehoustonwehaveaproblem on social media. One post online said, “Context matters. The whole story matters. Standing up for one of the best of teachers
matters. And, oh yeah, sound matters. Bowing to sensationalism can net you many
things; tonight we’re seeing the people speak very loudly. Sadly, though, my school has lost one of its
best.” The boy in the video who the teacher was playing
with wrote a letter himself. WLTX reports, “You can tell that she was playing with him. Even the boy himself wrote a letter that he
knows she was teasing and he loved her. They just jumped the gun on her, and I don’t
want to be a part of it.” Houston insists that she was merely joking
in the clip. Still the school district continues to say
that she stepped down on her own accord. That’s your news for now, for more on this
