Sri Siva Shankar Baba – Festival Discourses | Buddha Purnima | with English Subtitles

Buddha had a comfortable life Born to King Suddhodana and Queen Maya Devii in Kapilavastu, Nepal Never having faced any difficulty since his birth, he was raised in luxury; lived in luxury He was married, had a wife and child One day, he decided to wander outside the palace (never been outside of his palace) That day, for the first time, he saw a dead body, a very old man, a sick man etc. These realities like death, health, old age
pricked his conscience Because he was not exposed to these kind of things in his life In these thoughts, in the middle of the night, he left his wife, child, comfort of the palace, etc And started his quest to unlock the reason for people’s sufferings He decided not to return without having gained this knowledge Thus, started his quest for enlightenment His purpose was simple; to understand the reason behind hardships faced by people During his quest, he used to practice fasting continuously for 48 days.. During this period, he only felt hunger and
couldn’t remember God He was amazed by the situation, he left everything for God, but always thinks of food, because of hunger.. He encountered musicians playing sitar passing by The song was about the string in the musical instrument “If we don’t tune the string properly, we don’t get sound, if we over stretch the string, it breaks” At that precise moment, Buddha had a ‘eureka’ moment He realized that one should neither feed the human body with excess food nor starve The right thing to do was balance the body with right amount of food intake and concentrate on his quest He had several similar experiences during his lifetime His quest took him to the Gaya (Bodhi tree) Where resided the soul of a Saint who must have performed severe penance and attained enlightenment Like transfer of energy explained in physics Buddha obtained the energy and knowledge from that Saint/ Tree From that day on, he became Buddha People were upset that a crowned prince was begging for food..it was below the dignity of the kings men They wanted to kill Buddha.. They tried to kill him, but Buddha did not die! One day he reached a forest and wanted to pass by People warned him not to enter the forest Because, a thief and murderer named “Angulimala” resided there He steals the belonging of travellers and cut the people’s thumb and wear around his neck as a trophy Angulimala shouted at Buddha, asked him to come near..was ready to cut his finger But he couldn’t do anything, Buddha’s eye captivated him He didn’t want to hurt him.. Buddha enquired, why Angulimala is doing such things for living?? Angulimala replied, I have family to take care, I don’t know what else to do.. If he discontinue his barbaric ways, people would not respect him, fear him! And the King would kill him To this, Buddha told him, he (Buddha) would gain pardon from the King Angulimala was skeptical about that Buddha asked Angulimala to trust him and follow him Buddha hid Angulimala in a corner and approached the King, who is his follower.. Buddha told King that any person, good or bad joining Buddha Sangha is a brother to his members I have brought someone, doesn’t matter he is a good or bad person, he should be pardoned! Buddha requested King to pardon him, irrespective of his deeds.. When the King agreed, Buddha asked Angulimala to come forward At the sight of Angulimala, the King raised his sword to attack him And cursed him for spoiling the peace of his kingdom Buddha reminded King of his promise “Buddham saranam gacchami – I go to the Buddha for refuge” “Sangham saranam gacchami – I go to the Sangha for refuge” “Dhammam saranam gacchami – I go to the Dhamma for refuge” And requested him to pardon Angulimala The King pardons Buddha took Angulimala to shave his head, gave him a robe He took Angulimala wherever he go to beg for food After a few days Buddha told Angulimala that he had to go on his own When Angulimala went to beg, people started hitting him with stones Angulimala complained to Buddha that he was living a comfortable life and people were scared of him Now people don’t respect him and his body is laced with wounds To this Buddha, remind him of his actions..how people suffered and the pain they had to go through Unless you go through equal suffering, I can’t help you Similarly, everyone in his World is born to experience the balance of their karma Once the karmic balance is settled, you will attain happiness one cannot escape his karmic due For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction Buddha goes back to his country His wife requested that he visits her He went At the sight of him, his wife rushed towards him to express her anger Accusing him of abandoning of them whom he promised to love and cherish.. Instead went on to become a saint Buddha remained calm Buddha told his wife, “who told you that I don’t love you? I understood love from you (wife) and our son Since I expanded this love, I became Buddha from Prince Siddhartha It is not that I lost love, it is that I expanded on my love Don’t think, I left you because I lost interest or hated you One day, one man approached Buddha and asked if God existed? Buddha replied, Who God? What God? A second man approached and asked the same question Buddha replied, If not God, then who? Nothing exists without God The third person asked the same question and Buddha replied, “I do not know” A fourth person asked Buddha the reason for his inconsistent responses Buddha said, “I gave the same responses” The person asked, “how?” Buddha replied, “all these people who approached me had a predetermined notion on existence of God They only wanted to boast to others that Buddha agreed with their prejudiced notion My reply to them showed that I would not cooperate in their foolish game Therefore, my answer was the same for all A blind man approached Buddha The blind man said, Buddha, you are enlightened, show me God Buddha told him, “you are blind, How is it possible to show you God?” The blind person replied, “Why not? I’ve other senses like touch, smell, speech, hearing, etc. Buddha sent the blind man for treatment Once the blind man regained his vision He told Buddha, With these external eyes I can explore and see the beauty of this World But, like this, please open my inner eyes i.e. enlighten me Another person approached Buddha and said, he has many doubts Buddha agreed to answer all his questions and doubts after he spends one year with Buddha Eating the same thing, sleeping in
the same location, etc. without any questions After a year, you can ask as many questions as possible.. A year passed.. Buddha asked to bring that person.. The person responded saying “I don’t have any doubts” The person went to sit underneath a tree and closed his eyes to meditate There is a person sitting under the neighbouring tree and laughed looking at this person The first person enquires, why he is laughing The other person asked him if he came to Buddha to ask questions The person asked, how do you know that?? The other person revealed that he approached Buddha for the same reason To understand a Saint, you need to be with him and observe his actions why, when.. To understand the point that there must be a reason for his actions Without understanding this merely asking questions doesn’t show a person’s intelligence There is always a reason for every action taken by a Saint Observe, spend time with the Mahaan After you assimilate this knowledge, ask yourself if you have any doubt You wouldn’t, if you have assimilated the information properly There exist three types of people in this
world First type, who knows answers to all questions and does not have any questions to ask Second type, who is not interested in finding out answers to questions and thus, has no questions to ask The third type, who will ask a second question as soon as the answer for the first is received Synonymous with school children who want to showcase their knowledge by asking questions repeatedly he/she would keep raising their hands in the classroom Lord Krishna belongs to the first category – he knew answer to all questions Duryodhana belongs to the second category Arjuna, the third type. He asks the next question as soon as the previous was answered Arjuna had only two options, either to become Krishna or become Duryodhana For instance, if a child from 3rd standard is asked to study graduate books The child will find it extremely difficult and that is the path to become Krishna However, when you ask the graduate students to read the 3rd standard book, he/she will find it very easy.. Reaching the level of Duryodhana is very easy Understanding/ reaching Lord Krishna’s level will be difficult and the path will not be easy That is why 90 out of 100 people don’t want to become Krishna They want to climb down to Duryodhana’s level and enjoy materialistic life Even becoming Arjuna is not an option Because they would be oscillating between two points this and that Questions and answers More answers, more questions The option for anyone now is to elevate oneself to the role of Lord Krishna Not descend to the role of Duryodhana Because this isn’t an easy task, not many people remain on their path It is difficult to climb up the stairs but easy to descend them Nothing in this world need to be attained with great difficulty Qualities like compassion, kindness, love, etc. should all be earned the easy way These basic things are not achieved by people today People fight within the same household from morning till night How is it possible to elevate themselves to the next stage? Cannot three people live in love and harmony in this world? Why aren’t we able to attain this love and peace? People have a misjudged notion that praying to God is applying the sacred ash, Kumkum on the forehead or apply the namam, etc But that is not the case God is not an attainable object God is a becoming object Becoming God is easy How is coffee made? Milk, sugar, coffee decoction are mixed well Similarly, people are the mugs/ glasses/ tumbler in which coffee is made Pour some qualities like righteousness of Lord Rama Intelligence of Lord Krishna Compassion of Lord Buddha Sacrifice of Lord Jesus Christ, etc These qualities make you God See, It is easy.. God is a content of all good qualities As and when people start imbibing these qualities within themselves, the day is not far when they become Buddha themselves Baba formed a quotation long back “Siddhartha searched for light being in the darkness and became Buddha” “You can also search for light. If not Buddha, you will at least become buddhishaali (intelligent)” On this day of Buddha Purnima..this is my message You search for it.. Siddhartha became Buddha It’s ok, if you don’t become Buddha Become more intelligent
